Model answer
Linux Kernel is the core of Linux OS managing CPU, memory, devices, files and security between hardware and applications. It is monolithic yet modular — drivers load as modules. Handles process scheduling, virtual memory, file systems (ext4) and permissions. Example: uname -r shows kernel version.
LILO (Linux Loader) is an older Linux bootloader (now mostly replaced by GRUB). Stored in MBR, it loads the kernel into RAM at startup and passes boot parameters (which OS, single-user mode). Simple config in /etc/lilo.conf, but required re-install to MBR on every change — a key reason GRUB superseded it. In exam: Kernel = manager, LILO = starter.
