An operating system (OS) manages hardware/software resources and bridges user and computer. Examples: Windows, Linux, Android.
Major functions with office example:
- Process management — Schedules CPU; typing Karnali notice in Word while printing and scan run together.
- Memory management — Allocates RAM, virtual memory when full, isolates programs so one crash does not kill others.
- File management — Folders, naming, search, NTFS read/write permissions for staff records.
- Device management — Drivers and print spooler queue district letters while users keep working.
- Security — Accounts, passwords, MFA and logs; clerk enters, officer approves.
Without OS, staff would control hardware in machine code.
