An Operating System (OS) is system software that manages hardware/software resources and gives an interface between user and computer. Examples: Windows 11, Linux, Android.
Functions:
1. Process Management: Creates, schedules and ends tasks. Handles multitasking — typing FIR in Word while printing and antivirus scan run. Uses scheduling queues and context switching.
2. Memory Management: Allocates RAM per program, tracks free/used blocks, uses virtual memory (disk) when RAM fills, and isolates programs so one crash does not corrupt another.
3. File Management: Organizes files in drives/folders, handles naming, copying, searching and NTFS permissions (read/write per user).
4. Device Management: Talks to hardware via drivers with spooling/buffering. Print spooler queues multiple FIR prints while users keep working.
5. Security and User Management: Accounts, passwords, MFA and audit logs. Admin vs standard users prevent unauthorized deletion of records.
Recycle Bin — importance:
Recycle Bin is Windows' safety net for deletions. Deleted files/folders go there instead of permanent erasure, allowing Restore with original path intact. Only Empty Recycle Bin or Shift+Delete removes permanently (recoverable only via special tools). In police offices where a mistakenly deleted evidence photo could harm a case, Recycle Bin + regular backup prevents irreversible loss. Each drive has a hidden $Recycle.Bin with quota settings per user.
