Model answer
A computer is an electronic device that accepts raw data as input, processes it according to a set of instructions (program), and produces meaningful output (information). It can also store data for future use.
Characteristics of a computer system:
- Speed — Computers can perform millions of calculations per second (measured in MIPS, GHz)
- Accuracy — Produces highly accurate results when given correct input and instructions (GIGO principle)
- Storage — Can store vast amounts of data in primary (RAM) and secondary storage (HDD/SSD)
- Diligence — Can work continuously without fatigue or loss of accuracy
- Versatility — Can perform a wide range of tasks from calculations to multimedia
- Automation — Once programmed, can execute tasks automatically without human intervention
