Model answer
Generation of computer means stages of development based on the main electronic technology used (vacuum tube → transistor → IC → microprocessor → AI). Each generation made computers smaller, faster, cheaper and more reliable.
First Generation (1940–1956) — Vacuum Tubes:
- Technology: Large vacuum tubes for circuits, magnetic drums for memory.
- Features: Very large (room-sized), very slow, high power and heat, frequent failure.
- Language: Machine language (0s and 1s) only.
- Example: ENIAC, EDVAC, UNIVAC-I. Used mainly for scientific calculation.
Second Generation (1956–1963) — Transistors:
- Technology: Transistors replaced tubes; magnetic core memory.
- Features: Smaller, faster, cheaper, less heat, more reliable than first.
- Language: Assembly language, early high-level (FORTRAN, COBOL).
- Example: IBM 7090, PDP-1. Used in business and universities.
Third Generation (1964–1971) — Integrated Circuits (IC):
- Technology: Many transistors packed in one silicon IC chip; keyboards and monitors introduced.
- Features: Much smaller, faster, low cost, mass production started; multiprogramming OS possible.
- Language: High-level languages widely used (BASIC, Pascal).
- Example: IBM 360 series, PDP-8. Offices began using computers.
Fourth Generation (1971–present) — Microprocessors:
- Technology: Entire CPU on one microprocessor chip (Intel 4004 in 1971); VLSI circuits.
- Features: Personal computers born; very cheap, portable, GUI, internet and networks; huge storage.
- Example: Desktop PCs, laptops, smartphones. Used everywhere — schools, banks, Nepal government offices.
Fifth Generation (present–future) — Artificial Intelligence:
- Technology: ULSI, parallel processing, AI, machine learning, natural language, quantum computing.
- Features: Machines that think, learn and decide; voice recognition, robotics, expert systems.
- Example: ChatGPT-type AI, robots, self-driving systems, Nepali voice assistants.
Exam tip: Write any 5 generations with technology + 2 features + 1 example to secure full 10 marks. End with one line: today we use 4th generation PCs while moving into 5th generation AI.
