Model answer
Software is a set of programs, procedures and data that tells computer hardware what to do. Hardware without software is just a dead machine — software brings it to life. Example: without MS-Word, a computer cannot do word processing even if keyboard and monitor are working.
Types of software:
1. System Software — manages hardware and provides platform:
- Operating System: Manages all resources. Example: Windows 11, Linux, Android.
- Language Processors: Convert program code to machine code. Example: Compiler (C++), Interpreter (Python).
- Device Drivers: Let OS talk to hardware. Example: printer driver, graphics driver.
- Utility Software: Maintenance tools. Example: antivirus, backup tool, disk defragmenter.
2. Application Software — does work for the end user:
- General-purpose: Used by everyone. Example: MS-Word, MS-Excel, PowerPoint, web browser.
- Customized/Bespoke: Made for one office. Example: payroll system of Nepal Government, school fee system.
- Common examples in Nepal offices: MS-Office for letters, Devanagari typing tools for Nepali documents, email clients for communication.
3. Firmware / Embedded Software (often asked in exams): Software permanently stored in hardware chips. Example: BIOS in motherboard, software inside ATM, washing machine or router.
Remember for exam: System software = for the computer itself; Application software = for the user’s task. An office computer needs both — Windows (system) + MS-Office (application) to prepare a government letter.
